PwC-BCM Tax Workshop

PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), one of the world’s 4 global accounting and tax firms, and the Business Council of Mongolia (BCM) hosted the “International Tax Issues related to Inbound Investments” workshop on Tuesday, 15 April, 2008. The venue was the Khan Bank Theater. Tomas Balco, Senior Manager, Tax and Legal Service of PricewaterhouseCoopers based in Almaty, Kazakhstan gave the lecture to more than 90 BCM members from Mongolian and foreign invested companies, diplomatic missions and NGOs. Ms. Leylim Mizamkhan, a Mongolian Desk Assistant in the Tax and Legal Services of PricewaterhouseCoopers in Almaty, assisted in the presentation.

Onchinsuren, General Director of Onch Audit and Head of the BCM Tax Working Group, provided the Mongolian translation of the lecture as well as excellent elaboration for this bilingual Workshop.

Tomas is a renowned specialist on International Taxation and provides international and domestic tax advice related to structuring of inbound and outbound investments to and from Central Asia and Mongolia. Based on special request of Kazakh Ministry of Finance, he also participates in the process of redrafting of the Kazakhstan Tax Code. Earlier, Tomas provided his services in the area of cross border taxation to the European Commission in Brussels.

This free Workshop was a unique opportunity for BCM members to develop or deepen their understanding of the underlying principles of International Taxation and to examine them from the perspective of a foreign investor.

A testimonial received from D. Hulan (Mrs.), Executive Vice President of Tavan Bogd Group: "Tavan Bogd Group sent 5 accountants to the recent PwC-BCM Tax Workshop. Our accountants have highly praised the seminar due to two reasons. One, they had a good exposure to international tax systems relevant to issues comparatively new for Mongolia, such as taxing of dividends and capital gains at the time of IPO. Second, they have benefited from the fact that the seminar was bilingual and they could pick up the English words used in accounting. I think BCM should continue providing such opportunities to its members."

A reception for all attendees followed the Workshop and was sponsored by PwC. The use of the Khan Bank Theater venue was provided gratis by Khan Bank.
