Pope Benedict XVI received President Ts. Elbegdorj during the president's visit to Italy this week. Approximately 760 Roman Catholics currently live in Mongolia.

A press release issued Monday following the encounter states that during the meeting, “the good relations existing between Mongolia and the Holy See were recalled, as well as the understanding and cooperation between Church and State in the education and social sectors.”
The statement went on further to say that the political situation in Asia had been examined with particular attention to the importance of intercultural and interreligious dialogue for the promotion of peace and justice.
